SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A 19-year-old man charged with shooting an Afghanistan war vet at his homecoming party is due in court Thursday.

Ruben Ray Jurado faces an attempted murder charge in Friday's shooting that critically wounded 22-year-old Christopher Sullivan.

Defense attorney Michael Holmes told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that Jurado says some guests were inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons and drinking heavily, and that he was attacked and kicked as he tried to leave.

But authorities says Jurado began arguing with Sullivan's brother and Sullivan intervened. they say Jurado pulled a gun and fired, hitting Sullivan.
