August 27, 2011
MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say Hurricane Irene's center is continuing to move north-northeastward, bearing down on the coast of North Carolina.
The National Hurricane Center said at 2 a.m. EDT Saturday that the enormous storm was moving at 13 mph (20 kph) and the center was about 85 miles south of Cape Lookout, N.C. as the storm lumbered north-northeastward.
Maximum sustained winds are howling at 100 mph (160 kph), still a Category 2 hurricane.
