Elementary School Under Fire for Giving Students Free Condoms
June 24, 2010 - 12:22 PMMassachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick says he objects to a new policy in Provincetown allowing even elementary school students to receive free condoms, and to do so without telling their parents.
The Democrat told The Associated Press he called Superintendent Beth Singer on Thursday to register his complaint after media reports about the policy approved June 10 by the Cape Cod community's school board.
The governor says that he wants access "to be age appropriate" and that for young children, "parents ought to be involved."
He says Singer indicated she will revise the policy after the recent publicity. Singer did not immediately return a call or e-mail seeking comment.
Kris Mineau, president of the conservative Massachusetts Family Institute, called the policy absurd.
Patrick is seeking re-election against a field including two conservative opponents.
