Colorado Springs, Colo. (AP) - A 20-year-old Colorado Army private is accused of shooting and killing a Taliban leader who was shackled in a cell in Afghanistan.
The attorney for Pfc. David Lawrence says the Fort Carson soldier is taking medication for schizophrenia and isn't mentally fit to stand trial.
But The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that prosecutors said during a hearing Monday that he was calculated on Oct. 17 when he fired a single shot into the head of a prisoner north of Khandahar.
The Army is holding what's called an Article 32 hearing at Fort Carson to determine if there's enough evidence to try Lawrence. Testimony continued Tuesday.
The Indiana native was serving in Afghanistan with the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division.
