ELK GROVE, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff's officials say a California Highway Patrol officer who was shot twice and wounded on a highway south of Sacramento is expected to recover.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Ramos says the officer was hit once near his hip and a bullet traveled through his left wrist in the confrontation Sunday night. He says the officer underwent surgery and remained in a hospital Monday.
Ramos said the suspect fired several rounds from a handgun at two CHP officers during a traffic stop on Highway 99 in Elk Grove. He says the man didn't respond to orders to show his hands.
Local police later shot and killed the suspected gunman as he sat in his overturned car after a brief chase.
