BEIJING (AP) — State media says a Chinese court has sent activist lawyer Gao Zhisheng back to jail for three years for breaking his probation.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Friday that Gao had violated his probation rule a number of times. He was sentenced to three years in prison, with a five-year probation period, in December 2006 for inciting to overthrow state power.

The five-year probation period would have expired next Thursday. Calls to the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court and the Beijing High Court were not answered Friday.

Gao's case has been repeatedly raises by the international community, and his whereabouts have not been known for more than 18 months.
