Catholic League Attacks DNC for Linking Website to Porn

July 7, 2008 - 7:04 PM

(CNSNews.com) - The Democratic National Committee (DNC) may have violated federal law by linking its website to an Internet site depicting pornography, a prominent Catholic organization said.

The New York-based Catholic League found the link while examining a connection between the DNC and "Catholics for a Free Choice," a group denounced by the Catholic Church hierarchy as fraudulent.

Under the "links" section of the site www.dnc.org, visitors found a category called "Hispanic." The second to last entry in this category, "Willi Velasquez Institute," linked to a porn site.

Catholic League President William Donohue immediately denounced the association. The DNC's "support for anti-Catholic bigotry is now matched by its support for hard-core teen pornography. Whoever is operating its website should be fired immediately," Donohue said in a press release.

"Hispanic Catholics have now been hit in the face twice: the DNC has made its bed with anti-Catholicism and now it's made its bed with pornography, using an Hispanic organization as a front for its debased appetites," Donohue said.

A search by CNSNews.com confirmed the link to pornography. However, a search later Monday revealed the DNC had altered the link to connect to the William C. Velasquez Institute, a group whose mission is "to conduct research aimed at improving the level of political and economic participation in Latino and other underrepresented communities."

Calls to the DNC for clarification were not returned.

For months, the Catholic League has led a protest against the DNC for its association with Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC). Donohue has strongly criticized Frances Kissling, CFFC president, particularly for her efforts to strip the Vatican of its permanent observer status at the United Nations.

In response to pressure from the Catholic League, the DNC initially deleted CFFC from the links section of its website. However, it later added the organization to its "Religious Affiliated" section.

"Someone at the DNC isn't too bright," Donohue said in a press release earlier Monday. "First they delete Frances Kissling's Catholics for a Free Choice from their website and now they put her back up.

"There's obviously a fight going on at the DNC over this and for now, the Kissling forces have won. But they won't win in the long run," he said.
