ST. JOHNS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say the body of a 10-year-old Michigan girl was found at her home by police assisting child welfare workers who were trying to figure out why she hadn't been to school.

Police say Vienna Parker was found dead at her home in St. Johns, about 20 miles north of Lansing. The girl's mother was home when case workers arrived Thursday, and authorities say she's now hospitalized with possible self-inflicted cuts and a stab wound.

Police say the mother was last seen Sept. 7 during a welfare check after Vienna missed the first two days of school at Gateway North Elementary. Her mother said the girl had been sick and had diabetes.

Gateway Principal Christopher Smith says Vienna transferred to the school district last spring.

An autopsy is scheduled Friday.
