( - Google released the top search trends for 2013, and no surprise, Miley Cyrus was the #1 most searched person last year.

The top “trending” search terms (the topics that had the largest increase in volume since 2012) of 2013 were:

#3 Nelson Mandela

#4 Cory Monteith

#5 iPhone 5s

#6 Government Shutdown

#7 James Gandolfini

#8 Harlem Shake

#9 Royal Baby

#10 Adrian Peterson

Here’s a list of the most searched “what is” questions of the past year, according to Google, along with a brief answer.

#1 What is Twerking? (a style of dance made famous by Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s.)

#2 What is Ricin? (a lethal toxin)

#3 What is DOMA? (the Defense of Marriage Act)

#4 What is Molly? (slang word for the drug MDMA)
