Americans advance in water polo at worlds

SHANGHAI (AP) — The United States outscored Canada 6-0 in the second period and went on to win 17-4 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the men's world water polo championships.

The Americans will meet Hungary in Tuesday's quarterfinals.

In earlier matches, Montenegro beat Romania 8-4 and will meet Croatia in the quarterfinals and Spain edged Spain 9-8, advancing to a Tuesday quarterfinal against Italy.

Japan plays Germany later Sunday to determine which team takes on Serbia in the quarters.

The gold medal match is Saturday.
