Alveda King on MLK: ‘Man of God ... Who Feared and Loved the Lord’
(CNSNews.com) – Dr. Alveda King, niece of the slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. whose birthday is honored today as a national holiday, said that one thing people need to learn more about her uncle is that he was a Christian preacher, “who feared and loved the Lord.”
In a telephone interview, CNSNews.com asked Dr. Alveda King if “there’s something from Martin Luther King’s life and legacy that deserves more attention from the American people?”
King said, “People need to know Martin Luther King the man, the man of God, the preacher -- the one who feared and loved the Lord.”
She went on to say that people need to know that MLK was “the man who repented to God even as David repented in Psalms 51 for his own failings, his own sins and shortcomings, and the one who always said, ‘Come back to God, love the Lord, embrace the Lord.’”
“And I think people need to meet the prophet and the preacher,” Alveda King said of her uncle, who was a Baptist minister and who integrated his Christian beliefs into his civil rights activity and political speeches.
Rev. King was assassinated on Apr. 4, 1969, in Memphis, Tenn. Escaped convict James Earl Ray pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.
Dr. Alveda King is the daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A. D. King. She currently serves as a pastoral associate and director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries.
