(CNSNews.com) – Regarding global warming and public awareness, former Democratic Vice President Al Gore said that coal advertisements “condition your political thinking” and that “the public is lulled into an acceptance of going along with this policy of using the atmosphere as an open sewer.”

In an online interview with PBS’ NewsHour on Jan 31, Gore said, “Every news and commentary program on television has heavy advertising from coal, oil, gas. When they show you an ad from the coal industry, their purpose is not to convince you to say ‘Oh, I’m going to go down to the corner store and buy some coal,’ that’s not the purpose.”

“Their purpose is to condition your political thinking so that when policymakers, members of the Congress, face a conflict between a broad diffuse public interest and a passion,” said Gore,  “the public is lulled into an acceptance of going along with this policy of using the atmosphere as an open sewer -- that’s what we’re doing.”

He continued, “Ninety million tons of global warming pollution every day, trapping enough extra heat every day, that’s the equivalent of 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs going off every 24 hours.”

Gore made the remarks while promoting his new book, The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change.
