NEW YORK (AP) — An 80-year-old New York City teacher says she was wrongfully fired after complaining about a room assignment that forced her to shepherd her entire kindergarten class frequently to a distant bathroom on a bad knee.
Lillie Leon sued Tuesday to try to reverse her recent firing. The city Education Department declined to comment. City lawyers say they're reviewing the suit.
Leon's suit says she taught for 34 years in the city's public schools, but problems started when she was assigned last fall to a Queens kindergarten classroom without its own bathroom. Some other kindergarten rooms have attached restrooms.
She says she had to usher her 25 pupils through the school whenever one had to go to the bathroom. Her lawyer says she was eventually accused of insubordination, which she denies.
