An abandoned dog with the words "free" and "I need a home" written on it in marker is now is enjoying life as “Liberty.”

According to, Shannon Bettencourt just finished her shift at a bar in Benicia, California on July 3 when she saw the dog standing by a tree.

She was surprised the dog was left on the side of the street with the words written on its fur.

She took the dog home, where Bettencourt and her fiancé searched the internet for any information on the dog or how it came to be left in downtown Benicia.

They came up short with information but big on affection. Bettencourt is adopting the dog she has named Libby, short for Liberty.

Officials are continuing to look into how the dog came to be abandoned in the first place.

Update: According to the LA Times, the dog's original owner has been located.

The owner saw news coverage of the missing animal and contacted authorities.

Officials say the dog either ran away or was stolen.

Bettencourt has given up the dog to it's original owner.
