Controversy Continues: 'Redskins is a Powerful Name'

The two-minute video "Redskins is a Powerful Name" features members of different Native American tribes saying the NFL team name "uplifts my spirit," and that the Redskins emblem shows a “strong warrior.”

The ad was released online earlier this month on RedskinsFacts.com and recently appeared on television in the Washington, D.C. area during the August 23 pre-season game between the Redskins and the Baltimore Ravens.

The ad comes as controversy continues over the use of the Redskins name.

Many critics consider the name Redskins to be a racial slur. Even Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has criticized the team’s name from the floor of the Senate saying, “A tradition of racism is all that name leaves in its wake.”

Redskins owner Dan Snyder recently told ESPN he doesn't have to bow to pressure to change his team's name because it's not disparaging to Native Americans but instead is a term of honor.
