Ukrainian Officials Unmask 'Darth Vader' Presidential Candidate
The Ukraine has its own battle with dark forces, and now they have a leader: Darth Vader has announced he is running for president of the country, Agence France-Presse reported.
"I alone can make an empire out of a republic, to restore former glory, to return lost territories and pride for this country," Vader said in a statement.
The Ukranian Internet Party (UIP), which aims to create an electronic government in Ukraine, and offer free computer courses to all citizens, amongst other things, is running Darth Vader as their candidate (although Ukraine does not recognize write-in candidates.)
According to local media reports he has also reportedly demanded a plot of land in the southwestern city to park his space ship.
The party said it had paid the required 2.5 million hryvnia ($225,000 / 165,000 euro) registration fee for their unusual candidate.
Ukraine is holding a snap presidential election on May 25 after parliament ousted pro-Moscow leader Viktor Yanukovych as a result of bloody street protests against his government.
Darth Vader's identity has been discovered: Ukraine officials say he is a Kiev native electrician born in 1956. Though his passport says Darth Vader, all other official documents identify him as Viktor Shevchenko.
"This might look like an innocent joke. But this is no laughing matter," said election commissioner Zhydenko. "Someone was trying to turn the presidential election of Ukraine into a farce." It took 15 officials nearly a week to identify the erstwhile candidate.
True to character, the Sith Lord is not easily deterred: AFP reports that he quickly announced he plans to succeed President Vladimir Putin in Russia when that election rolls around in 2018.
