In this Feb. 6, 2012, editor Joan Houston Hall holds the final volume of the newly completed Dictionary of American Regional English in her office in Madison, Wis. The dictionary gives readers a wide-ranging chronology of how the English language is spoken. It traces popular and not-so-popular words and phrases to their earliest known uses. Then it breaks down how they’ve been used, and incorporates maps to show distinct regions of origin. (AP Photo/Scott Bauer)
