(CNSNews.com) – At an event in Tallahassee, Fla., on Monday to promote his new book, retired neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson told a local reporter he is against legalizing marijuana for recreational use because there are already enough people in this country with low intelligence.

“Many studies have demonstrated that persistent regular use of marijuana by the developing brain can result in significant decreases in IQ," Carson told Capital News Service in a story posted on the News4Jax Jacksonville, Fla., television station website

"We already have enough people with low IQs, we don’t need to be generating more,” Carson said.

Capitol News Service asked Carson about his stance on marijuana at an event where Carson was signing copies of his new book, A More Perfect Union; What We The People Can Do To Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties.

“We asked Carson about what’s expected to be a huge issue in Florida for 2016: Increasing access to marijuana,” the article stated.

“Medical marijuana, when it’s done in the proper way and the proper form, can be very beneficial, particularly with patients with seizure disorders,” Carson said.

“But that’s as far as the retired neurosurgeon would go on the topic,” the article states. “He said no to the idea of recreational use.”

“Many studies have demonstrated that persistent regular use of marijuana by the developing brain can result in significant decreases in IQ," Carson said. "We already have enough people with low IQs, we don’t need to be generating more.”
