Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) said he'd debate anybody who says earned citizenship is amnesty when he appeared at the National Association of Manufacturers "Outside-In" forum on immigration reform earlier this month.

"Earned legalization is not amnesty. I will debate anybody who tries to suggest that these ideas that are moving through Congress are amnesty. They're not. Amnesty is wiping the slate clean and not paying any penalty for having done something wrong," Ryan commented at the June 12, 2013 forum.

As reported earlier today, when former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio was running for the Senate in 2010, he stated that giving illegal aliens "an earned path to citizenship" is a "code word for amnesty."

Sen. Rubio (R-Fla.) is now the leading Republican in the "Gang of Eight" pushing for passage of the contentious immigration reform bill, S. 744.
