Over the last few weeks of the Occupy Wall Street protests there has been a term being used a little loosely by bloggers and across the internet to describe participants as “socialist puppets”. It’s a term that ignores the true socialist puppets in our midst, the well-crafted, man-made, manipulated puppets that teach socialism.

The “In The Heart Of The Beast” puppet and mask theatre in Minnesota, not only uses puppets and masks to promote a socialist message but they received tax payer money as well.

According to, the website that tracks spending under the Recovery Act, The “In The Heart Of The Beast” theatre received a $25,000 grant in 2009.

The group, whose name comes from a quote popularized by Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara, puts on a variety of shows which include a Mayday Parade piece entitled “The New Bridge” in 2008.

A description of the performance from their website says, “The bridge we thought would lead us to prosperity turns out to be the Bridge of Debt and it is about to tip over! Big Puppet dangles a carrot in front of us, a frenzied population, including Waldo, a.k.a. Ordinary Guy. Never mind that we’ve consumed to the edge of bankrupting the planet and our souls.”

There is also an excerpt describing Scene 3 from this year’s Mayday parade presentation “Caws to Unite!”: “Wretched crows with broken wings protect their nests. Vicious dogs plunder their nests, stealing the eggs.

The eggs are hoarded. Dogs are rewarded.

We are excluded from the table.”

So next time you think of ‘socialist puppets’ keep in mind the “In The Heart Of The Beast” puppet and mask theatre, and remember there are real puppets that are socialist ready to take center stage.
