( - Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is proposing legislation that would require 80 percent of all new cars in United States to be capable of running on “flex-fuels” by 2016.   Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and Ken Salazar (D-Colo.) joined Lieberman in sponsoring the “tripartisan” bill intended to curtail gasoline dependence. The federal mandate would require 50 percent of new automobiles by 2012 and 80 percent by 2015 to run on ethanol, methanol and bio-diesel.

( - The California Supreme Court on Thursday rejected efforts by homosexual advocacy groups to remove Proposition 8 from the November ballot.  Prop 8 would amend the state constitution to read, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

( - The conservative American Family Association is launching a boycott against McDonald’s in response to the fast-food chain’s support of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).   Richard Ellis, vice president of communications for McDonald’s USA, has been appointed to the NGLCC board of directors and McDonald’s contributed $20,000 to the organization.

But most of that oil cannot be tapped because of environmental regulations.

Further, indications are that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) does not support drilling for that oil and would not take steps to do so if elected president.
